We caught a taxi this morning that took us to the Place des Vosges where we had breakfast at Carettes. Mary had heard about this from a Facebook group she follows. They are supposed to have the best hot chocolate in Paris. We both had a croissant breakfast and hot chocolate with a huge pile of whipped cream. Mary thought their hot chocolate was a bit better than Angelina’s, Paul’s liked Angelina’s better. We’ll have to try then both again next time we are in Paris.
Then we walked to the nearby Picasso Museum

We then took a taxi over to the Opera Garnier area for lunch. A most unusual window that we passed.
After lunch we headed to the opera house for our afternoon tour.
The grand staircase was magnificent and the site for lots of influencers trying to get their photo shoots in.

The Palais is the opera house that is featured in musical Phantom of the Opera. On the tour the guide pointed out box 5. The box that the Phantom specifically requested be reserved for him in the musical.
The tour took us around much of the public areas and then down to the orchestra area of theater where we were able to sit and enjoy the opulence while the guide told us about the building. The theater was a mass of burgundy/wine colored seats and glowing gold.

In the mid-20th century the public had lost interest in the Palais Garnier. In an effort to revitalize the opera France's Minister of Culture commissioned Marc Chagall, a Russian and French early modernist artist to paint a new mural for the ceiling of the theater. The mural, installed in 1964, was mounted on a framework over the existing mural, which remains hidden to today. Chagall's mural honors fourteen of famous composers such as Mozart, Wagner, Ravel, Debussy and Beethoven. The Chagall mural is a blaze of color.
There was also a huge reception hall along one side of the building. Again, tons of gold leaf everywhere.

After dinner we took a taxi back to the Hotel des Invalides for the Illuminations show.
The beautiful dome lit at night.
The show took place inside the Church of the Dôme. Music and spectacular lighting all around the interior of the building.
