2025-08-17 The Netherlands and Paris: Sep 12 (Friday)

The breakfast room (and restaurant) of the Hotel Vermeer.

We spent the day exploring Deventer. There was a great market set up in Brink Square.

A highlight at the market was a stall where the lady was making stroopwaffles. These are a famous Dutch treat that consists of two layers of nearly paper thin waffles with a caramel sauce filling.

We then walked down to the Toy Museum...

hundreds of old toys.

A praxinoscope. This was invented in 1877 and consists of a rotating drum with a central drum of mirrors, one for each image on the drum walls that reflect the spinning images. It is a very early movie device.

And there was a large model train set-up on the top floor.

They also had a large room set up with courses for balls to run through. You used a crank to crank the ball up to the top of the course and watched as the ball made it’s way through the convoluted course. A bit mesmerizing.

The town also has a number of murals. We found a very few of them.

We had dinner at a restaurant called Jackie's. It was named in honor of Jacqueline Kennedy, who was never at there. They just liked her.

The restaurant was very busy and we had no reservations so they sat us at the bar where we enjoyed watching the lady behind the bar pull drinks, make tea and fill up dishwasher racks with glasses to go into the washer under her counter. We chatted some.
